Gambling is entertainment, and it is priced

Every casino product is built with a mathematical advantage to the operator. Over enough time and enough stakes, that advantage decides the result. A winning session is possible; a winning strategy is not. The only sane way to treat a deposit is as the cost of an evening's entertainment — money that is gone the moment it is transferred, whatever happens next.

That is not a disclaimer we are obliged to print. It is the single most useful thing on this website.

Set your limits before you deposit, not after

Every operator licensed in Great Britain must give you these tools, free, in your account area. Use them at registration, while you are calm and before any money is at stake — that is when the decision is a good one.

TOOL 01

Deposit limits

Cap what you can deposit per day, week or month. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately; raising one is delayed by a cooling-off period, by law.

TOOL 02

Loss limits

Cap net losses over a period rather than deposits. Useful if you tend to redeposit winnings.

TOOL 03

Reality checks

A pop-up at an interval you choose showing elapsed time and net position. Set it to 30 minutes.

TOOL 04

Time-outs

Lock yourself out for 24 hours up to six weeks. It cannot be reversed early — which is the point.

TOOL 05

Self-exclusion

Close access to one operator for six months to five years. Marketing must stop and the account cannot be reopened until the period ends.

TOOL 06

GAMSTOP

One free registration excludes you from every gambling website and app licensed in Great Britain at once. Six months, one year or five years.

Signs it has stopped being entertainment

Gambling harm rarely announces itself. It shows up as small changes in behaviour long before it shows up as a crisis. Any of these is worth taking seriously:

  • Staking more than you planned, more often than you planned, or for longer than you intended.
  • Returning to recover losses — the single most reliable warning sign there is.
  • Gambling with money set aside for rent, bills, food or debt repayments.
  • Borrowing, selling possessions, or using a credit facility to fund gambling.
  • Hiding the extent of it from a partner, family or friends, or lying about time and money spent.
  • Feeling restless, irritable or low when not gambling, or gambling to escape stress, anxiety or boredom.
  • Losing interest in work, relationships or activities you used to care about.

If you recognise yourself in more than one of these, stop and talk to someone today. The services below are free, confidential and staffed by people who deal with this every day. Nothing about calling them is unusual.

Blocking software

Self-exclusion works better with a technical barrier behind it. Gamban, BetBlocker and Gamblock block gambling websites and apps across your devices; BetBlocker is free. Most British banks — including Monzo, Starling, Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest, HSBC and Santander — offer a gambling block on debit cards in their app, often with a delay of 48 hours or more before it can be lifted.

Protecting under-18s

The legal minimum gambling age in Great Britain is 18, and licensed operators must verify age before any deposit or stake. If children use your device, parental control software — Net Nanny, Qustodio or your operating system's built-in family settings — will keep gambling content out of reach. This website is labelled adult-only in its metadata for exactly that reason.

Rules worth keeping

  1. Decide the amount before you start, and treat it as already spent.
  2. Never gamble with borrowed money, an overdraft or a credit facility.
  3. Never chase a loss. The urge to recover is the mechanism that turns a bad evening into a bad year.
  4. Do not gamble while drinking, upset, or unable to sleep.
  5. Set a time limit as well as a money limit, and use a reality check to enforce it.
  6. Keep gambling as one hobby among several. If it becomes the only one, that is the signal.

Our commitment. GreenLine Review will never present gambling as a way to make money, solve a financial problem or recover a loss. We will not use urgency language, countdown timers or manufactured scarcity. We will not review or link to any operator that is absent from the Great Britain Gambling Commission public register, and we will not market anything to anyone under 18.
